2019 Retiree Medical Plan Changes

October 30, 2018

Contact your retiree benefits specialist and download the new medical plan information by clicking the Benefits tab at the top of this page.

Dates and times for information sessions are at the bottom of this page.

For calendar year 2019, there will be the following changes to the Retiree Medical Plan:

  • Increased copays for non-preferred brand drugs.
  • New Medicare Advantage Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) medical plan administrated bAnthem Blue Cross Blue Shield for Medicare-eligible retirees and Medicare-eligible dependents. The Medicare Advantage plan provides medical benefits comparable to those currently available through the Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Supplement plan.

There is no action required at this time.

  • Enrollment into the new Medicare Advantage plan for Medicare-eligible retirees and dependents will be automatic.
  • Express Scripts will continue to administer the prescription drug plan for all retirees and dependents.
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield will continue to administer the medical plan for retirees and dependents not eligible for Medicare, including those living outside of the United States.

You and your dependents may be eligible for different medical plans based on each individual’s
Medicare-eligibility. The family member who is eligible for Medicare will be covered by the Anthem
Medicare Advantage PPO. The family member who is not eligible for Medicare will continue to be
covered by the current Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO.

Please Note: In early 2019, the University of Chicago will conduct a dependent eligibility audit to ensure
that only eligible dependents are covered under University medical plans. Participation in the audit is
not optional and will require enrollee action.
The Benefits Office will provide more information on the
audit and required verification procedures in March 2019.
