Alfred T. "Fred" Anderson, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geophysical Sciences and a pioneer of melt inclusions, passed away January 15, 2020. He was 82.
Below is an excerpt from the news shared by Fred Ciesla, Chair and Professor in the Department of Geophysical Sciences:
"Fred was a valued member of our department faculty from his appointment in 1968 to even beyond his retirement in 2004. His research focused on the use of silicate melt inclusions to understand how mixing and volatiles impacted the properties of magmas, as well as understanding stratigraphic records of volcanic deposits. He also served as editor of the Journal of Geology. His love of the field inspired him to give tours of downtown buildings, pointing out the petrology of the stones from which they were made.
A great summary of Fred’s career, as well as tributes to him as a person, can be found in the citation when he was awarded the 2001 Bowen Award, presented to him by the Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology Section of the American Geophysical Union: https://honors.agu.org/sfg-awardees/anderson-receives-2001-bowen-award/."
