Paul B. Moore, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geophysical Sciences and the namesake of Paulmooreite, passed away on March 2, 2019. He was 78.
Professor Moore developed an interest in minerals early in his life and spent over 30 years on the faculty at the University of Chicago (attaining the rank of full professor at the young age of 32). He specialized in the study of phosphates from granite pegmatites, the mineralogy of Långban, Sweden, and in the physics, mineralogy, and structure of lithium-bearing and boron-bearing minerals. He was a prolific student of crystal structures analysis and proposed a number of crystallo-chemical relationship in minerals.
Prof. Moore received the Mineralogical Society of America Award in 1973 and authored hundreds of publications. In addition to having Paulmoorite named in his honor in 1979, he himself named dozens of minerals throughout his career. In an interview with U-Haul, he said: "I believe that human curiosity and the fascination of the natural world are the only things that count. The serious-minded human being, the scientist (amateur or the professional), is always motivated by the unique."
