Raymond Fogelson, Prof. Emeritus and a founder of ethnohistory, 1933 to 2020

January 22, 2020

Raymond "Ray" Fogelson, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Anthropology and the College and a founder of the subdiscipline of ethnohistory, passed away January 20, 2020. He was 86.

Below is an excerpt from the news about Ray and fellow emeritus professor Nancy Munn shared by Joseph Masco, Chair and Professor in the Department of Anthropology:

"It is difficult to imagine Haskell Hall without Nancy and Ray. [...] Ray retired a few years ago and continued to attend department events while happily splitting his time between Chicago and his cabin in Georgia.

Nancy and Ray were both, in their very different ways, pioneering scholars who made foundational contributions to the quality of life in the department. Nancy and Ray were also individuals who crafted highly unique lives, filled with both energy and creativity, and maintained very loyal communities of friends and colleagues.

They will be missed.

Information about funeral arrangements will be forwarded when known."
