Below are some recent and noteworthy events from the University:

The Regenstein Library at 50

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Regenstein Library, which was dedicated on October 31st, 1970. Throughout the year, the Library will be celebrating the occasion with a series of online events held throughout the year. The celebratory events began in September with a conversation about the Library’s impact on campus between John Boyer, Dean of the College and Martin A. Ryerson Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of History and the College, and Anne Walters Robertson, Dean of the Humanities and Claire Dux Swift Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Music and the College: “How Regenstein Library Ushered in a New Era of Scholarly Distinction.” You can view a recording of the their conversation, moderated by Brenda Johnson, Library Director and University Librarian, on the Library’s YouTube channel.

 

Humanities Day

An annual tradition at the University of Chicago since 1980, the Humanities Division celebrated Humanities Day virtually and offered lectures, discussions, virtual tours, and performances featuring faculty, invited speakers, and discussants on October 17. Marth Nussbaum, Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics, delivered the Keynote Address: “Animals: Expanding the Humanities.” For recordings of these Humanities Day 2020 lectures and sessions, as well as many other Humanities Division events, visit the Division’s YouTube channel.

 

Neubauer Collegium

On October 13, 2020 Vikram Patel, the Pershing Square Professor of Global Health in the Blavatnik Institute's Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, delivered the first Director’s Lecture of the 2020-21 academic year, titled “Reimagining Mental Health in the Shadow of the Pandemic.” Deborah Gorman-Smith, Emily Klein Gidwitz Professor and Dean of the School of Social Service Administration, served as the respondent.
