Melvin Gordon Rothenberg, a professor emeritus of mathematics who spent more than four decades making groundbreaking mathematical discoveries at the University of Chicago as well as teaching hundreds of students and contributing to social justice causes, died Aug. 1, 2023 at the age of 89.
Anne Gomer (1928-2023), mother of Richard and Maria, and widow of former UChicago chemistry professor Robert Gomer (1924-2016), passed away on April 17. In 1996, after Robert retired as a professor emeritus, Anne and Robert started a tradition of interdisciplinary research talks held regularly at their home in Hyde Park. This series became the Robert and Anne Gomer Lecture Series, a fixture of the emeriti community that is continued today by the Emeriti Center. Anne was a supporter and volunteer for many functions of the University throughout her life, including chemistry student lectures, UChicago concert series, and UChicago Medicine. Her two children are alumni of the Laboratory School.
Robert E. Lucas Jr., a Nobel Prize-winning economist whose revolutionary theories transformed the field of macroeconomics and our understanding of economic policy, died May 15. He was 85.
Terence “Terry” Edwin Martin, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology and the Committee on Immunology, died April 12 in Chicago. He was 81.
Roman L. Weil, a longtime Booth School of Business faculty member who specialized in accounting and expanded access to financial literacy for those serving on corporate boards, passed away on February 1 in Chicago. He was 82.
