In Spring 2017, the Provost convened an Emeriti Faculty Working Group and charged them with submitting recommendations on how to improve the experience of emeriti faculty at the University of Chicago. This Working Group’s efforts expanded on the work of previous divisional committees in the Humanities and Social Sciences, both of which produced reports in 2016 indicating a number of recommended ways to develop a program for emeriti faculty. The Working Group ultimately submitted A Proposal for Improving Emeriti Engagement, which recommended, among other things, the establishment of a standing Emeriti Faculty Steering Committee.

The Emeriti Faculty Steering Committee began its work in Fall 2017 and meets quarterly to discuss challenges facing the emeriti community and to propose ideas for improving emeriti resources and communication.
